A Message From The Founders Of River Street Poker
October 12, 2011
Having lived and worked in Atlanta for most of our adult lives, we are veteran participants of countless recreational Texas Hold’em poker leagues and have witnessed first-hand the absolute explosion in their popularity since mid-2003. Each new league in the still-growing Atlanta market will develop and implement a somewhat unique spin on the concept. Ultimately, though, what one does exceptionally well, another seems to ignore completely (and vice versa). After 8 years as players and tournament directors – having searched for, and failed – to find a single league that incorporates every key component well, we decided to start our own, seizing on an opportunity to form one in a city that has been, to date, devoid of a truly well-run tournament league.
In our experience the biggest problem with most leagues is a primary focus on competitive poker at the expense of the two most important determinants of success in this business as we see it: a genuinely enjoyable experience for the participants, and increased revenues and profits for the host venues. Of course, the poker itself needs to be well-structured and professionally managed. Tangible short and long-term incentives for playing the game well need to exist, and the unique format we’ve created certainly encourages and rewards good poker. Ours is also a league, though, that incentivizes our less-skilled players to not only become but remain active participants. From a league member’s perspective – above all else – our league is fun, and that’s what keeps players of all levels of poker expertise coming back for more.
Our model emphasizing the playing experience and not just the way the cards fall is also what ultimately benefits our hosting venues. River Street Poker fosters a true symbiotic relationship between the organizers, players, and hosts. The result is league participant pride in not only how they play their poker, but where. A sense of ownership is established, and a requisite economic support of our venues – the glue that holds it all together – develops accordingly.
We’ll play for fun. We’ll play for awesome prizes. We’ll play for charity and other great causes. And we’ll play to support our local economy. Whether you’re looking to play Texas Hold’em or become a host for our events, we invite you to join our family. It’s going to be a great ride.
